ZuZu VTG  Bakelite Cliffnotes:

When I state that a piece is Bakelite in one of my listings in means that it is genuine vintage Bakelite or Catalin Bakelite and that the pieces test positive with simichrome. Catalin refers to the Catalin Corporation and is the company that took over the Bakelite corporation when Mr Baekeland (the inventor of Bakelite and the founder of the Bakelite Corporation) died in 1944. The new company continued creating beautiful pieces of Bakelite using the traditional formula of phenol and formaldehyde but often without the added fillers like recycled socks or wood fiber flour, or carcinogenic fillers like asbestos. This lack of fillers often made for far more beautiful (and often more valuable) pieces of jewelry, for there are a greater variety of colors available to work with and create and the translucent or transparent factor (like in Prystal) is attainable whereas with traditional Bakelite of pre 1930's you may only attain opaqueness and a relatively boring range of colors (often browns and yellows and greens.)

In a buyers market today and especially on eBay Catalin and Bakelite are considered one and the same. When a piece is Catalin or Bakelite or other phenolic resin (such as Marblette) I will list them as such. French Bakelite or Galalith which often tests as Bakelite but has in fact made from Casein, or milk protein will also be listed as such.
